When Menya Musashi opened, he frequented this place for 3 days straight! He claims that it tastes the same as the one he has in Japan and usually it is hard to get a spot (in Japan) as there is always a long queue.
With such a glowing review from a Japanese, how could I not try it out for myself?
They have 3 oil flavours: Shiro (original onion), Kuro (fried shallot and garlic) and Aka (Musashi chili oil). You can also choose to have it Ramen style (in soup) or Tsukumen (soup served separately). I went with the Kuro Musashi ramen [MYR26]:
The green tea [MYR2] served is very cold, not teeth-numbing but very refreshingly so and tastes so good (the taste of tea was very strong but it wasn't bitter or thick in the mouth) I could just visit them for their tea alone!
As for their ramen, I LOVE it! If you love pork soup bases, you have to try this. It doesn't have the heavy "porky" taste (which I do NOT like) but it is packed with flavour and is soooo good. I could see small pieces of pork belly floating in my soup (their soup is made with pork belly and chicken feet, amongst other ingredients and boiled for 10-12 hours). Totally YUMS! The char shu was tender and melt-in-your-mouth, the bamboo shoots were the perfect texture and taste, my only gripe was that my egg was a little overcooked.
Majority of the diners really enjoy Menya Musashi, but there are a handful who do not like it. If you find their broth too flavourful, or you enjoy more subtle flavours, you might love Gantetsu's Hokkaido ramen which is just next to Menya Musashi.
Their menu is quite limited at the moment, I would like to see them introduce more flavours in the future!
